What am I suppose to do?

Glory is a VERY stubborn horse. She doesn't go when I ask her to go, and she won't pick up her hooves for ANYTHING. So we started to do some natural horsemanship things. Well this is the first day. She did awful. All the things the horse was suppose to do she just stood there and ate grass. Well, I still love her the same. I just wish she would listen. So you guys have any ideas???

  1. Try this: Gently use a dressage whip on the horse's haunches to make her move forward while you lead her with a lead rope tied to her halter. Accompany the tap with a verbal cue, such as "Go." Horses naturally move away from pressure, so only a light tap is necessary to encourage her to move forward. Eventually she will learn to associate the word "go" with moving forward.

This method is called classical conditioning. It works by using both verbal and physical cues at the same time until the horse learns what the word means. In Glory's case, tapping her haunches encourages her to move forward, and saying "go" at the same time will teach her that "go" means to move forward.

I hope this could help and that it didn't sound too complicated. If so, just reply to this comment and let me know.

  2. Red was so stubborn I honestly thought me owning him wouldn't work. Use a crop. I HATED the idea at first, but just tap her when she acts stubborn. Also, she's not comfortable yet. Give her time. She'll probably improve. She may just be a lazy horse in general, or she may get better as YOU get comfortable with her and vice versa. When you are nervous, she will sense it and stub up on you. Red did the same! Red went from stubborn/lazy like Glory to wanting to gallop, doing everything I ask, giving kisses and following me around on command, but it took a few months. Give her time. :) If you need any more advice, shoot me an email. I have more ideas, just holding a fussy baby and trying to type!
